Configurable Peli Case PCs – “base model” products with selectable options
The 4 Example “base model Peli Case PCs” cover all popular screen sizes, specifications and modifications 9 out of 10 customers might ask for.
If they ask for something completely different, we can always push them towards a 100% custom designed Peli Case PC.
What we need to use (off the shelf products) and what we need to DESIGN AND MANUFACTURER at BVM to make the project work
- Small and Medium have the same internal parts (2.5″ or 3.5” sbc mount, psu, cooling, cables and everything else needed)
- Large and X Large have the same internal parts (mini-itx mount, psu, cooling, cables and everything else needed)
- Off the shelf – 4 different size Pelicase’s
- Off the shelf – 4 touchscreen displays (7”, 10”, 12” and 15”) 16:9 with HDMI input (so we don’t have issues with different LVDS cables)
- We need to design – 4 different screen bezels
- We need to design – 2 motherboard mounts – 2.5” or 3.5” for Small and Medium and Mini-ITX for Large and X Large
- Off the shelf – 3 – 5 different motherboards – 1 x 2.5” or 3 x 3.5″ (small and medium) and 2 x Mini-ITX (1 with PCIe 16X Slot) (large and x large)
- Off the shelf – CPU, RAM, SSD
- Off the shelf – PSU, cables, cooling, wireless card and any other parts needed
If the customer selects options from the configuration form that DON’T mention a customisation charge we’ll already have the part designed, we can make the part at BVM, we’ll have a price list and can quote an “off the shelf” price.

They’re NOT the exact bits I’m suggest we use.
As we’re targeting 1 off orders, it would be better if we used commercial grade motherboards, and offer industrial boards as a customization or upgrade.

Example base model changes we might be asked to make
Small NRE = £250 – £500 | Medium NRE = £500 – £1000 | Large = £1000+ depending on the work we need to do
we charge around £125 an hour for design work
If the customer selects options from the configuration form that DON’T mention a customisation charge we’ll already have the part designed, we can make the part at BVM, we’ll have a price list and can quote an “off the shelf” price.
- If the customer asks for an extra I/O port on the bezel, we charge a small design fee as we’re only adding a hole and extra connector.
- If they ask us to install an M.2 capture card, we charge a small design fee as we’re only adding a card, cable, installing software and possibly modifying the bezel.
- If they ask for waterproof when open, this is a big change so we can charge a large design fee as we’re making a lot of changes, or push them towards a 100% custom design.
- If they ask for an NVIDIA RTX GPU to be installed, we charge a medium to large design fee because we’ll need to design a mount for the card (4 to 6 hours work), possibly change the PSU and cooling.
- If they ask for some custom test equipment to be installed, we charge a medium design fee because we’ll need to design a mount for the equipment (4 to 6 hours work).
- If they ask for multiple bits of custom equipment to be installed, we charge a medium to large design fee because we’ll need to design a mount or mounts for the equipment (4 to 6 hours work per mount) and possibly make some other changes.
- If they want the bezel power coated we charge what it costs for someone to power coat the metal and add a little profit.
- If they don’t want any changes to the base model, we don’t charge an NRE because we’ve already designed everything and we’re making a lot of money on the hardware.
- If they ask for a 19” screen, we push them towards a 100% custom design because it’s a brand-new system we’ll need to design.
Target Pricing
Standard Config – 8Gb RAM and 512Gb SSD. We aim to make £1000 – £1500 profit on each “base model” sold
Time to quote – 15 – 30 minutes for a base model or 30 – 60 minutes for a base model with some customisation
Time to design custom parts – On average between 4 and 8 hours
Time to manufacture parts – CNC’d Bezels and motherboard mounts 1 – 2 hours, 3D Printed custom parts unknown
Time to build – 3 – 4 hours for base model or 4 – 5 hours for a base model with 1 customisation
If we have all the parts in stock
Base Models without customisation will take around 4 – 5 hours to quote and build
Base Models with customisation will take around 4 – 6 hours to quote and build (plus the time to design and manufacture the custom parts)
If we don’t have the parts in stock and we’re outsourcing manufacturing
Quotes will take 3 – 5 days. Builds will take up to 12 weeks
Without Customization
Any higher than these sell prices and would be much better value for money to use a rugged laptop or tablet.
